Glossary

From ABC and AFH Tissue - to web order and zigzag-folded. Or much used abbreviations like DIP, EPTAS and TAD. Marketing words, technology words and buzz words from "the management language". The meaning of all these expressions are not always obvious to those of us that are not specialists in this very field. Thus we are happy to introduce our Tork glossary.

  • A

    • ABC

      Activity Based Costing, a method to allocate exact costs to the single activities, which are causing them.

    • Account management

      Sales function supporting key account managers and managers for smaller accounts.

    • AFH Tissue/Away From Home Tissue

      1) The name of our business group in SCA, and 2) a word commonly used in the tissue business to describe the market for tissue products that are NOT sold to private households (via the retail trade). An AFH Tissue product might e.g. be the toilet paper in the washroom of a restaurant, an airport, a hospital, a office or a factory. In other words: hygiene products for people who not are at home.

    • Air-laid

      A non-woven technology characterised by a web formed from air-laid pulp, bonded by latex or heat.

  • B

    • Best Available Technology (BAT)

      To give lowest cost, highest performance and flexibility. Not considering Capex.

  • C

    • CAPEX

      Capital expenditure, in principle cost of investment.

    • Centre-feed

      Hardwound, coreless rolls of tissue are dispensed via the centre-feed method, allowing users to tear off as much as required every time. Eliminating cores has also made replacing rolls much quicker and easier.

    • C-folded

      Towels folded in C-formation. These towels are designed for minimum space requirements – providing more towels in one dispenser.

    • CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose)

      A chemical (modified starch) that boosts the wet strength in a tissue product.

    • Consumption sizing

      The sales force’s tool to define product consumption for a specific end-customer (sector). This is service offered to help our distributors and FSCs.

    • Coreless

      Tissue paper rolls without an inner core.

    • DIP

      De-inking plant.

    • Drop size

      Average size of delivery measured in m3.

    • Dry crepe, DC

      A tissue paper technology based on drying over a Yankee cylinder and then creping.

  • E

    • E- Business

      The use of Internet and related technologies along the whole of our value chain, from supply to consumption.

    • EDI

      Electronic Data Interchange is a structured inter-company exchange where independent computer systems communicate via a standard messaging system.

    • Embossing

      To give paper a three dimensional structure.

    • End-customer

      Company purchasing tissue products from a distributor, a facility service company or from us directly, for usage at their premises

    • End-user

      Person using the products.

    • EPTAS

      European pricing and trade allowance system.

    • Extranet

      Web-based solution where customers have access to secured/password protected customized information. Example of information could be prices, campaigns, etc.

  • F

    • Facility Service Company/FSC

      Company selling multi-services to end-customers such as contract cleaning, catering, security, gardening. Their role in the value chain is to deliver the washroom service including cleaning and refilling of dispensers.

    • Flexi-Box/Pro-Box

      A disposable cardboard dispenser, the Tork Flexi-Box (or Pro-Box) is ideal when wipers are needed in various locations and positions. These boxes are easy to carry wherever required.

    • Impulse embossing

      A tissue paper technology based on a fast, high-pressured drying step.

    • Industry specific service

      Marketing and sales concept designed for specific industry segments, e.g. Partners in Your Care (Hospitals) and FoodSure (Food chain)

    • Interfolded

      Used with Tork Xpress dispensers, interfolded towels allow for larger tissue sizes. The individual towels fully unfold ready for use as they are dispensed, while the next towel is fed forward. Maximum drying capacity ensures optimal hand hygiene.

    • Interfolded towels

      When packed interfolded, individual towels fully unfold ready for use as they are dispensed, while the next towel is fed forward. This packing method provides optimal hygiene, since each towel is so easy to take in hand and, being fully unfolded, provides maximum drying capacity.

    • Joint Business planning

      A systematic process that in cooperation with a strategic partner, leads to joint targets and activities with clear responsibilities, deadlines and financial effect.

    • Key Account Management

      Sales function primarily dealing with consultative sales to strategic accounts.

    • KPI

      Key Performance Indicator, a special measurement giving a clear picture of the actual performance of a certain area, as for example EBITDA margin; SMA% of net sales, price/ton development; machine efficiency % etc.

    • NBSK

      Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft.

    • Need based segmentation

      A segmentation model describing the AFH market based on customer needs taking into account the market sector they are operating in.

    • Non-woven

      Non-woven wipers have the look and feel of textiles, but none of the disadvantages. Produced from a combination of cellulose and synthetic fibres (e.g. rayon and polypropylene) they offer the best qualitities of both textiles and paper.

    • Odour entrapment

      To find chemical ways to make the tissue paper itself shield the smell of what has been wiped away.

  • P

    • Pilot

      An activity or project set up in order to develop and/or validate a specific solution.

    • Plain label

      Products not carrying any brand, neither Tork nor SCA or any other brand.

    • Ply bonding

      To bind paper sheets together, joining plies.

    • PR

      Public relations, e.g. free and paid publicity (article or editorial) in trade magazines when launching a new Tork product.

    • Private label

      Products and/or packaging labelled with the customer brand.

      Regional Business Logistics.

    • RCT

      Recovered Paper.

    • Relevant Supply Areas

      Optimum of production scale and distribution costs.

    • Shoe press

      A long soft nip that presses water from a paper web when producing tissue paper.

    • Spunlaced

      A non-woven technology characterised by a web-bonded by high-pressured water yets, hydroentangling.

    • Supply chain efficiency

      The efficiency/cost to which a segment/customer gets their supplies of product (or service) including warehousing, transport cost, production.

    • Supply Chain Management

      The management of all activities and functions associated with the creation and ultimate delivery of a product or service.

  • T

    • Through Air Dried, TAD

      A tissue paper technology based on drying with hot air to create the softest tissue available. TAD means that the tissue is dried by a smooth flow of air that gives it the unique character of being extremely soft yet strong and absorbent. Ideal in hygiene-sensitive areas where frequent hand washing is critical.

    • Top-Pak/Top-Holder

      The Tork Top-Pak/Top-Holder system is a highly effective, yet simple method of dispensing industrial wipers. The wall-mounted Top-Holder secures a disposable Top-Pak refill. A plastic bag with perforated opening, the Top-Pak dispenses wipes one-at-time, unfolded and ready for use.

      Open Internet solution through which customers can place orders over the Internet instead of using the phone or a face-to-face meeting.

      A tissue based technology based on a partial drying over a Yankee cylinder and then creping.

    • Zigzag-folded

      Zigzag-folded towels are used with Tork Classic dispensers. These towels fully unfold ready for use as they are dispensed, while the next towel is fed forward. Similarly, zigzag folded toilet tissues are used with the Tork Bulk-Box, for maximum hygiene.
